About the Event

SCV SWE and Golden Gate SWE promotes SWE's mission by awarding scholarships to local women pursuing an accredited engineering or computer science degree in the United States.

Lara Leininger is the Director of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s Energetic Materials Center (LLNL EMC) in Livermore, CA.  In this role, she is the principal contact for the science of high explosives, propellants, thermites and pyrotechnics at LLNL, driving strategic direction and facilitating execution of the science of energetic materials.  She also manages a project to execute an aggressive and ambitious high explosive and energetics modernization strategy addressing long-term explosive production challenges for the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration. 

Lara joined LLNL in 1997. She has worked as a Computational Finite Element Analyst, Principal Investigator, Program Manager of the Joint DoD / DOE Munitions Technology Development Program, and (currently) Director of the Energetic Materials Center (EMC) and Project Manager for the LLNL High Explosives & Energetics project. Lara also spent over two years as a Managing Engineer at Hinman Consulting Engineers in San Francisco, specializing in anti-terrorism/force-protection and blast consulting for a range of projects.  Her primary interests are in failure modeling and assessment of structures and mechanical components under blast loading and high explosives reaction-zone physics and chemistry.  Lara received her BS in Mechanical Engineering from University of California, Santa Barbara, her MS in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, and her PhD in Civil Engineering from University of California, Davis.
