About the Event
Join us for a five-part DE&I series offered through SWE's Advanced Learning Center. We will be streaming the webinar together from 6-7:30 PM. Discussions will take place at frequent intervals during the webinar to make it more interactive.
Cultural competency - the ability to interact with people from different cultures, as well as social and economic backgrounds, is only becoming more important in today’s workplace. After all, we need to effectively work with people who don't share our native language, who may not share the same beliefs, principles, or lifestyle as us. Being culturally fluent is critical not only to individual success, but to the success of teams, and more broadly for SWE as an organization, and its relationships with corporate partners and members.
Exploring scenarios focused on cultural fluency - as well as the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity, participants will work on developing their own cross-cultural skills needed to accelerate DEI in the organization. This session also uncovers the influence of cultural factors on identity and how cultural norms and values affect one’s interactions with others. Strategies are introduced to question explicit and implicit forms of power, privilege, and inequity and to engage with people from other cultures with courage, sensitivity, openness, and curiosity.
